Condolence From: Julie (Johnson) Litwin
Condolence: What a beautiful written tribute for a remarkable man. My entire family went through the Draper school system and each one of us has to most wonderful memories of "Coach"...going all the way back to elementary school when he would pop in the classrooms during snack time pretending to be the "Cookie Monster" there to gobble up our cookies! :) His silly, loving and commanding presence heightened the room with excitement every time he entered. Coach had a way of making you want to straighten up and fly right, just by being in his presence. Born an icon in the making it seems, and fulfilling that destiny with magnificent glory. When I first hear of this heartbreaking loss I thought, "Oh my goodness, what a devastating loss." and then, "Oh my goodness, what a live so beautifully lived." Thank you Coach, for all that you gave of yourself to so many, for authentically caring, for making such a difference in the lives of so many...for being wonderful you. We (the Johnson's) send our love and condolences to your family.

Story Title:
Coach My Teacher...
(To Family and all..)

Though you now have reached the heavans above, I wanted to share some memories with your family and friends... I came to DraperHS as an 8th grader, transferring from Central Park Jr. HS in Schenectady.

I was a very talented growing athlete when I came to Draper. My dream was to play football and baseball for Mt. Pleasant HS, but I moved to Rotterdam. It was time to sign up for baseball and football at Draper.

It all started with my first encounter with's how it went...

I started my first gym class, and low and behold, it was Coach that ran the class. I remember that coach was a strapping man with a voice you could never forget.. He reminded me of a tough guy, but had a way with all the students in gym class. He molded his class participants in his own way. We all always were focused in gym class.. if not, coach woul let you know it ... though, he also shared a humorous side to keep us at ease..

Well, we were playing softball in gym class one early spring day,... I got into one of his pitches and hit a long home run... Ithen was playing shortstop.. I made a play, going in the hole, making the play and thew out the hitter throwing off balance.. I think I impressed him.

I remembered exactly what he said to me after gym class. " I want you to try out for the baseball team for the freshman team, and I was only an 8th grader.. That all pannd out well.. as I played varsity the next year as a freshman, and started... Guido, Newberry, Kranitzky,. Nichols, Dagastino was on the varsity at the time. Then, he brought me up to the varsity (football) as freshman for the undefeated team in 66.

Coach made me feel special right through my senior year.. He was always on me, trying to improve my skills alwarys. I realize to this day, Coach was my biggest fan.. though I earned it since I worked very hard on my own... It was an extreme honor being voted team captain for both baseball and football at Draper HS.I always gave it 110% at all times for Coach and my Draper teammates...

Let me say this about Coach.. I wll always remember some very special conversatons we both shared privtely. It meant so much to me for him to tell me I was one of the finest athlete's he's ever coached. I cherish those special words he stated to me... Of course, the finest athlete I've ever seen in my many years was Timmy Higgins... easily.. Coach and Timmy had a special bond which was always so special for coach.

Coach, you always taught me the proper way to conduct myself on the field and off.. You stated to me that you can't cheat life Mike.. You get out of life what you put in.... It's so true Coach, you are right again, like you always were. Because of you, I now share that guidane you taught me with the many hundreds of athlete's I have workd with for over 32 years.. I thank you so very much for giving me a part of you in way...

Condolence: I am so sorry to hear of your great loss. Recently I lost
my dear mother, and found great comfort in the Holy Bible,
like at Isaiah 25 verse 8 - "The Sovereign Lord will
swallow up death forever, and wipe away the tears from
all faces." Also at Revelation 21 verse 4, we find
God's promise to remove both pain and death. I hope
these verses will give you a measure of comfort
during your time of grief.

Condolence: If you grew up in Rotterdam and went to Draper Coach Erickson was what your idea was of tough. I played football for him - although not very well - but my most indelible memory is of how good of friends he and Marie were to my Mom and Dad.

When my Mom passed away I was standing alone after the ceremony at the cemetery and coach came up to check on me. He told me how much he hurt for my Dad. How he could not imagine what he was going through at losing my mom.

I have thought of that moment over the years and it was than that Coach stopped being my idea of tough and became my idea of what a man should be... His empathy for my Father, his good friend, his love for his wife who I know he cherished, and him taking the time to check on me.

My deepest condolences to Marie and the family.

Condolence: I will always remember Coach. He was one of the biggest reasons I went to college to become a physical education teacher. When I went back to Draper to substitute I always looked to him for advice. He was a great teacher, coach and mentor. So sorry for your loss.
